Spring 2008 Enrichment/Instrumental Faculty

Vincent Barile has been the Afterschool Karate teacher at LREI for over eight years.  He is a second-degree black belt in the Japanese style of Goju Ryu and has over 15 years of experience in this form.  Vincent is also on the Physical Education team at LREI, teaching Karate in the High School Division.

Mary Cherney teaches all woodwind instruments in the Afterschool program.  She has been teaching at LREI for the last 18 years.  In addition, she is the head of the music program at PS/IS 89 in Battery Park City.  Mary's performing career has featured her in concerts, both of jazz and classical music, in the New York area as well as annual summer performances in France. Mary is currently performing and recording with 'Duo Nova Antigua' and pursuing a long time interest in Renaissance music.

Seth Eastman has been singing with and teaching young children since completing his Masters degree in Early Childhood Education at Bank Street.  At LREI, Seth has been an associate teacher with Kindergarten and Second Grade, a co-teacher for the Fours with Sandy Wolkenburg and a Head Camp Counselor with Little Red Summer Camp.  Seth has been playing guitar for fifteen years. 

Dave Edson has been teaching in the Afterschool and Summer Programs, and in various Lower School grades at LREI since 2003.   His classes have included sports, science, music, and performing arts.   In addition to teaching, Dave is a professional actor and musician.   He has been playing guitar for 17 years, specializing in the blues.   Dave's theater education includes a BFA from Ithaca College and extensive training with Anne Bogart's SITI Company. He always teaches things that he loves, so when a child feels the excitement of learning about a giant squid, experiencing teamwork, creating art or making someone laugh...there is no turning back!

Tuesday Faust has a BFA in Modern Dance from Texas Christian University.   She has been teaching ballet, modern dance, improvisation and creative movement classes to all ages since 1999.   In addition to creating her own work, Tuesday is a member of the Tze Chun Dance Company.

Meghann Erskine received her undergraduate degree in Music Education from New York University. Since graduation she has been a member of the faculty of the Diller-Quaile School of Music where she teaches Preschool Music and art classes as well as Music and Movement. She joined the Afterschool Program at LREI in 2001. She continues to study piano and voice and enjoys performing at various venues.

Adrian Jevicki is a graduate of Brown University where he studied Theater, Speech, and Dance.  While there, he was also fortunate enough to take physics with Nobel Laureate Prof. Leon Cooper whose interest in the arts as well as physics helped open new doors to thinking about the sciences for Adrian.  In addition to working in the Afterschool program and Summers at LREI, Adrian is a performing artist and choreographer who has worked with various downtown and Brooklyn-based dance/theater companies.

Eric Losh is an artist/ illustrator from Martinsburg, West Virginia. He is a graduate of the West Virginia University graphic design program, and he is currently earning his Master of Fine Arts Degree from the School of Visual Arts in the Illustration as Visual Essay Program.  Recent publications include INSECTaside (2006), and Fair Margaret & Sweet William (2007). This past summer he served as an Associate Counselor and Camp Art Specialist for Little Red Summer Camp.

Bárbara Martínez has been performing since she was a child, singing and acting in opera, off-Broadway theater and feature film. She performs as both dancer and singer with flamenco dance companies such as Sol y Sombra, Andrea del Conte Danza España, Oscar Valero Company and Pasión y Arte and with musical groups, such as Gazpacho Andalú, Flamenco Sepharad and Coba. Her recent credits include singing for Pilar Rioja at El Repertorio Español, dancing at Lincoln Center Out of Doors and choreographing and recording original music for the feature film Buscando a Miguel. She also performed for several productions of Carmen and La Traviata at The Metropolitan Opera. In addition to Afterschool at LREI, Bárbara teaches at Bank Street School and Fazil's Studio, and recently taught master classes for artistic gymnasts of Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo".

Chris Mateer holds an MFA from Ohio University and a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art.   He is a working visual artist who participated in the 2004 Summer Residency for Emerging and Mid-Career Artists at the Cooper Union.   Christopher was the art specialist for Little Red Summer Camp and LREI Institute 2005.   He has been the art instructor at St. Clare of Assisi in the Bronx, and previously taught woodworking, mixed-media, cartooning, drawing and painting to children in the Boston area for over three years.   Christopher has been a visiting artist at the University of Toledo and Denison University.

Stacey Miehe was most recently a sports specialist and head counselor at Summers at LREI 2005.   She is currently an Associate Teacher in the Kindergarten class.   Her coaching resume includes soccer and basketball at Nightingale-Bamford School; a New York City based traveling softball team, and basketball camps in Danbury, CT.    Stacy's own awards include the Little East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year and Most Outstanding Player, as well as the NCAA Regional All-American.

Caroline Moore is a singer, actor, and pianist. She is a graduate of NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study and studied voice at the Juilliard School. She has sung in concerts at the Metropolitan Opera, the Winter Garden, Carnegie Hall, B.A.M., the Paul J. Sharp Theater at Lincoln Center, and Alice Tully Hall. She was the score pianist for the documentary Favela Rising, and composed the score for the film Whatever Happened to Gavin Buckmaster. Caroline has been on the faculty at LREI since 2001, and is on the faculty of the Diller-Quaile School of Music. She is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Music and Music Education at Teacher's College, Columbia University.

Emily Ondracek, a native of Chicago, started playing the violin at the age of 5, and began giving public concerts soon thereafter.   At 16, Emily gave her solo debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, playing Vivaldi's Four Seasons Concertos. Since that time, she has performed throughout the United States and Europe, and at festivals such as Aspen, Italy's Festival de Due Mondi, and the Cleveland Orchestra's Blossom Summer Music festival, where she was awarded the Joseph Gingold prize for outstanding performance.   For the past two years, Emily has received the Morse Fellowship, a grant for resident teaching artists in the New York Public School system. A certified Suzuki instructor, she teaches at School for Strings and has given violin workshops throughout the country.   Emily received both her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Maseo Kawasaki.

Jason Rabinowitz has a BFA in Composition from the Conservatory at Purchase College. He has been teaching for nine years, five of which were in the New York City Public School system. In addition to teaching, Jason is a music producer and director whose songs have been featured in movies. Jason is from New York and is the founder and main composer for a New York City underground rock sensation called the Bloodsugars .

Joel Remland   A veteran of the Afterschool Program, Joel Remland is in his fifth year at LREI, serving as Department Head for the Reds group.  Joel is also a perennial staff member at Little Red Summer Camp, acting as head counselor for six consecutive summers.  A graduate of NYU with degrees in political science and journalism, he got his start in education as an academic tutor in the America Reads work-study program, earning classroom experience at PS 3 in the West Village.  In his free time, Joel has been pursuing a lifelong passion for music, playing guitar and singing in various bands over the last ten years, recording albums and performing for audiences across the US and Canada.  

Peggy Resnick is the Lower School woodshop teacher. She began her career teaching art in the public schools, became the woodshop teacher at the Bank Street School for Children, and came to LREI five years ago.  Peggy has a BA degree from Washington University, a BFA from Cooper Union, and an MA from Teachers College. 

Vincent Scialla's achievements include the Off-Broadway productions and performances with Glen Velez, Anthony Davis, Yale Symphony and the Brooklyn Conservatory Percussion Ensemble. US Dept. of Defense tours have taken him to the Caribbean, Middle East and Egypt. He is a student of Morris "Arnie" Lang, and can been seen performing in New York City with his electro-acoustic world music group, Mission: on Mars . Vin teaches at Church Street Music School, LREI and privately. 

Ann Shaumburger has been the Lower School Art teacher at LREI for fifteen years.  She is a painter who shows regularly in New York City.  She created Urban Oasis, a seventeen frieze glass mosaic permanently on view at the R/N Fifth Avenue subway station in New York City.  She has a BS in Art from Skidmore College and an MS in Art Education from New York University. 

David Ullmann is a guitarist and composer. He graduated from the New School with a BFA in Jazz Performance in 1999. David has been teaching in Afterschool at LREI for seven years and his greatest joy is hearing a first performance of "Hot Cross Buns". He is also actively involved in the NYC jazz scene.

Steve Volkmann has been a science teacher for over 15 years. Using physics principles to teach engineering concepts, he helps students understand how and why machines work and how structures stand and support weight. Steve enjoys machines, building, creativity and technology, and brings all these elements together in meaningful hands-on projects. Steve is currently teaching seventh and eighth grade science here at LREI and brings his enthusiasm to the classroom in order to stretch students' thinking and help them design and construct working examples of these principles.

Hannah Watkins Gilfillan has been working in Afterschool and Summers at LREI since 2006.  Hannah holds a bachelor's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in English and Dance & Choreography and an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from Sarah Lawrence College. In addition to teaching, Hannah works as a freelance writer.

Fred Wilson has been a noted chess teacher, bookseller and author for over 30 years. During the last fifteen years he has beenteaching chess to children, and currently runs chess programs at City and Country School, Grace Church School, Village Community School, Metropolitan Montessori School and Packer Collegiate Institute. He has authored and co-authored 13 books, including A Picture History of Chess, 101 Questions on How to Play Chess, 202 Checkmates for Children and many others.

Nora Woolley began teaching at LREI six years ago, after earning her BFA in Theater from The Experimental Theater Wing at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. In addition to teaching theater, visual art, and being a Middle School department head in Afterschool at LREI, Nora has worked for many years as a Head Counselor in Little Red Summer Camp and most recently as the Program Coordinator for LREI Institute 2007. Nora has also taught physical acting and character work at NYU. Nora performs with an array of theatre companies both regionally and abroad.

Peter Yarin is a pianist, composer and teacher. An early student of classical music, Peter discovered jazz as a teenager, which he pursued in studies at NYU. Soon he was performing weekly at Birdland and in other jazz clubs in New York City. Currently, Peter performs with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, a 1920's/dixieland big band (recently at the JVC Jazz Festival and on "Conan O'Brien"). As a composer, Peter is at work on several theatre projects: his work has been heard at Raw Impressions Music Theatre and will be performed at an upcoming concert at the Kaufman Center. Peter is a faculty member of the Diller-Quaile School of Music; he has also served as a teaching artist within programs at Appalachian State University, the Brooklyn Arts Exchange, and was music director of the National Dance Institute's China Exchange program.

Ken Zwerin is currently the Afterschool Blues Department Head, and has been working in the Afterschool and Summer Programs here at LREI since 2005.  Ken played organized soccer for ten years as a goalkeeper.  He has coached three age levels and is an accredited U.S. Soccer Federation coach.  He is also a professional musician, writer and actor.
