DIRECTOR'S NOTE
Theater has the power to shed light on darkness. It is a gathering place for people to tell stories and to listen deeply. It is a ritual as old as time and can help communities ask important questions through the telling of these stories. Eighteen years ago, Moisés Kaufman and the Members of Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie, Wyoming to try and understand the town's response to the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student. The Laramie Project is the artifact of that inquiry; and, as we have guessed, it is as relevant today as ever.
I am so proud of our students. They are working on difficult material and they are doing it with incredible grace and passion. I'm sure you'll agree. They are processing a lot right now. The recent election has sparked swirling dialogue around hate speech and marginalization, so in effect, The Laramie Project feels like a gift. We are honored to tell this story because we NEED to tell it. We need to have the conversations about why and how hate is born and grows, and perhaps, how we might usher it out of our lives once and for all. Thank you for being here. Thank you for listening to these important words and for supporting these brave, beautiful students. In memory of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr.
