What Can You do? Get Involved!

Come to a Red is Green Meeting! Talk to your kids about ways you and your family can conserve energy, reduce waste and consumption and help save the planet. Remember: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Questions, comments or suggestions? Please reach out to redisgreen@lrei.org

Red is Green Initiatives:

• Newsletter: Creating an educational newsletter on a broad range of environmental subjects to inform LREI families about ways to take care of the environment.

• Field Trips: Exploring a ‘green’ NYC.

• Speakers: Bringing in local speakers to talk about a variety of environmental subjects.

Green Changes At LREI:

• Environmentally friendly classroom furnishings, flooring, motion sensor lights and storage in Middle School and third grade classrooms with future renovations to come.

• School directory is paperless.

• Recycling bins through out the Sixth Avenue Building.

• Low VOC paints in middle school and third grade classrooms.

• Cafeteria serving a selection of local and organic food

• Individual classrooms and teachers making ‘green’ choices

• Member of the Green Schools Alliance

• Cafeteria using napkins and cups made of post consumer recycled material

covian.com – website of resources in major cities, including New York. Find green dry & wet cleaners, organic restaurants & more.

Letsgogreen.biz – website with eco-friendly green products for your home or office, including water bottles, household cleaners, garbage bags and more. You can choose to designate a portion of the cost of your purchase to LREI as a fundraising opportunity.

Storyofstuff.com – fascinating website explaining the history of consumption and what really happens to our garbage and what we can do about it.

NYC Gov Wasteless - not sure what you can recycle in your trash?? This website will tell you what is allowed and where you can take your unrecyclable items.

earth911.com– great website for finding recycling centers for those hard to recycle items as well as info on how to recycle, ways to stop pollution and protect the environment.

Lesec.org – the Lower East Side Ecology Center is a great resource for finding out about things like electronics recycling drives in the city, worm composting tutorials and gardening sessions. Check out their website for upcoming events.

greendepot.com -The Green Depot, 222 Bowery – new store for all of your eco-friendly home needs, such as cleaning supplies, composters, organic bedding, low voc paint and more. Also includes a builder section, in case you’re about to do a renovation
